Paper wasps are the umbrella-nest builders under your deck rail, porch ceiling, shutter, and grill lid — reddish-brown, long-legged, and comparatively docile until you’re within a foot of the nest, which is exactly where your hand goes when you open the grill. A mature summer nest holds twenty to seventy-five wasps. Yellowjackets are the picnic menace and the late-summer emergency: compact, bright yellow-and-black, nesting by the thousands in ground burrows, landscape walls, and — the worst version — wall and ceiling voids of the house itself. How a nest becomes an emergency: the colony year
Every colony in the yard traces back to a single overwintered queen.
