Spiders are a symptom. Treat them as the problem and you will be treating them again in a month.
Spiders are predators, and they set up where the food is. A house with a lot of webbing is a house with a lot of insects for the spiders to eat, and the surest way to reduce spiders on a Springfield porch is to reduce what they are catching there. Any company that shows up, sprays the eaves and leaves has treated the visible half of the problem.
In this city there is a specific reason that matters, and its name is Buck Creek.
Buck Creek runs through the middle of town, and that changes everything
Most cities keep their water at the edge. Springfield does not — Buck Creek runs straight through the center of the city, the Mad River forms the western boundary, and C.J. Brown Reservoir sits on the northeast corner with 1,970 surface acres and better than fourteen miles of shoreline.
Moving and standing water produce insect hatches. Midges, mayflies, mosquitoes and the general mass of small flying insects come off the water in waves through the warm months, and they are drawn to porch lights and lit windows after dark. Where that hatch lands, webs follow within days.
This is why homeowners a few hundred yards from the creek get web-building spiders on the porch at a rate that people four blocks up the hill simply do not. It is also why the most effective single thing you can do about spiders on a Springfield porch has nothing to do with spiders: change the exterior bulbs to warm-toned or yellow LED, or move the light away from the door. Fewer insects at the light means fewer spiders on the ceiling, and it works better than most sprays.
Stone basements and the damp-cellar complex
The other half of the Springfield spider picture is underground.
A great many houses here sit on stone or rubble foundations built between 1870 and 1930, and a stone basement four hundred feet from a creek runs at a very different humidity than a poured basement on high ground. That humidity supports an entire community of insects — springtails, silverfish, camel crickets, sowbugs, the mold-feeding beetles that turn up in stored cardboard — and where those live, cellar spiders and their relatives follow.
House centipedes belong to the same picture, and they are worth a word because they alarm people more than almost anything else we deal with. They are predators of exactly the insects listed above. Finding them is a reliable indication that the basement is damp enough to support a food supply — which means the useful response is a dehumidifier and attention to the moisture, not a can of spray.

The two that actually matter, and the many that do not
Ohio has two spiders of genuine medical significance, and almost everything you will find on a Springfield porch is neither of them.
The black widow is present in Ohio but uncommon, and it favors undisturbed sheltered spots — under a woodpile, in a crawl space, behind stacked material in a garage or shed. The brown recluse is genuinely rare in this part of the state; the overwhelming majority of bites attributed to it here are something else entirely, frequently a skin infection. What you will actually find, in rough order of frequency: cellar spiders in the basement, funnel weavers in the grass and along foundations, orb weavers building the big overnight webs across a porch opening in late summer, wolf spiders that come indoors in fall and alarm people by being large and fast, and the harmless jumping spiders on window sills. That said, “harmless” and “acceptable on the front door” are different standards, and we do not think anyone should have to argue about that. If you want the webs gone, that is a perfectly good reason to call.
What we actually do
- Knock down and remove the webbing. De-webbing eaves, porch ceilings, corners, window frames and the underside of decks — physically removing webs and egg sacs does more immediate good than any product, and it resets the picture so you can see whether treatment is holding.
- Treat the harborage and entry points. A residual application at the perimeter, around door and window frames, under the eaves, at the sill line and in the basement corners — where spiders travel and rest, not broadcast across surfaces where nothing lives.
- Reduce the food supply. This is the part that separates a lasting result from a two-week one. Treating for the insects the spiders are eating is what actually lowers the spider count on a creek-corridor property.
- Deal with the moisture and the light. Basement humidity, exterior bulb color and placement, firewood stacked against the house, leaf litter along the foundation. Unglamorous, and it does more than the spray does.
A note on what does not work: ultrasonic repellers do nothing, and neither do chestnuts on a windowsill. Spraying a spider directly with a household aerosol will usually kill that spider and accomplish nothing about the next one.
