Why Spraying the Trail Backfires
The small dark ant trailing along a kitchen counter or the edge of a sink in April is almost certainly the odorous house ant. Crush one and it smells faintly of coconut or spoiled citrus, which is where the name comes from. It causes no structural damage and no meaningful disease risk, but it is genuinely difficult to eliminate, and understanding why matters before anyone reaches for a spray can.
These colonies are polygyne — many queens rather than one — and they exist as networks of interconnected nests rather than a single central colony. Attacked with a contact insecticide, they bud: queens split off with groups of workers and establish new satellite nests away from the disturbance. One trail behind the dishwasher becomes four trails in four rooms, and the household has spent money making the problem substantially harder to solve.
The trail is actually the useful thing, because it is a map. Ants on a trail are carrying food back to a nest, and the correct response is to give them something worth carrying. A properly matched bait is slow-acting material suspended in food; foragers take it back and distribute it through the colony by mouth-to-mouth exchange, reaching queens and brood that no surface spray will ever contact.

The First Forty-Eight Hours
Baiting has a counterintuitive phase that costs a lot of jobs, so it is worth stating clearly in advance: for the first day or two after bait goes down, ant activity frequently increases. That is not failure. A food source has just been placed and recruitment does exactly what recruitment does. Foragers call in more foragers, and the visible trail gets busier before the colony declines.

Getting that right is most of the craft in this work, and it is the usual reason a store-bought bait did nothing.
Forty Years of Mulch

Consistently finding them indoors is therefore not primarily an ant problem. It is a water problem that has recruited ants.
On Fairfield houses the single most common source is the deck. A ledger board bolted to the house without proper flashing has been wicking water into the rim joist for years, and that rim joist is exactly the kind of damp, enclosed, structural wood a satellite colony wants. After that: window sills under failed exterior caulk, framing behind a shower on an exterior wall, a chimney chase taking water at the flashing, and roof valleys or gutter overflow points keeping a section of fascia damp.
The evidence that identifies them is frass — coarse, sawdust-like shavings mixed with insect fragments, accumulating below a small opening. Carpenter ant galleries are clean and smooth inside; termite galleries are packed with soil. Both appear on a WDI report, and if we find carpenter ants we look for the water first, because treating the colony without correcting the moisture simply books a return visit.
