Add slab-on-grade foundations that put living space directly on the ground, and the two most common ant problems here practically build themselves.
Pavement Ants and Sixty-Year-Old Concrete
The small dark ants pushing up little piles of excavated sand along a driveway joint, a walk seam, or the edge of a garage slab are pavement ants, and this city gives them an unusual amount of habitat. The base beneath a slab is well drained, easy to excavate, warmed from above, and completely protected from disturbance. Sixty years of freeze-thaw has opened joints and cracks throughout it, providing both nesting space and access.
On a slab house that access runs straight indoors. The expansion joint where a garage slab meets the house wall, the joint at a poured stoop, plumbing penetrations coming up through concrete, and settlement cracks under flooring all connect the nest directly to the interior. It is why people report ants appearing at the base of a wall or along the edge of a floor with no obvious trail from outside — the trail is under the slab, and no amount of perimeter spraying outdoors will reach it.
In spring these colonies produce winged swarmers that emerge from a walk seam, a garage floor crack, or a baseboard, and that reliably alarms people who reasonably wonder about termites. The distinction takes five seconds. Ants have elbowed antennae, a pinched waist, and forewings noticeably longer than the hind wings. Termites have straight antennae, no waist, and four wings of equal length that they shed in small piles.

Odorous House Ants and Why Spraying Backfires
The other very common ant here is the odorous house ant — small, dark, trailing along a counter or the edge of a sink in April. Crush one and it smells faintly of coconut or spoiled citrus, which is where the name comes from. It causes no structural damage and no disease risk worth worrying about, but it is genuinely hard to eliminate, and the reason matters a great deal before anyone reaches for a spray can.
These colonies have many queens rather than one, and they exist as networks of connected nests rather than a single central colony. Hit them with a contact insecticide and they bud: queens split off with groups of workers and establish new satellite nests away from the disturbance. One trail behind the dishwasher becomes four trails in four rooms, and the household has spent money making the problem materially harder to solve.
The correct response is bait. A properly matched bait is slow-acting material suspended in food; foragers carry it back and distribute it through the colony by mouth-to-mouth exchange, reaching queens and brood that no surface spray will ever touch. The delay is deliberate, which is why the first forty-eight hours often look like failure as recruitment increases. Spraying at that moment destroys the process at the precise point it is working.
Carpenter Ants in the Older Neighborhoods
Around South Main and the older streets, the large black ants come into play. Carpenter ants are a quarter to a half inch long, most active after dark, and they excavate galleries to nest rather than feeding on wood. They want wood that water has already softened, so consistently finding them indoors is not primarily an ant problem. It is a water problem that has recruited ants.
The moisture sources on those houses repeat with real consistency: porch roof flashing that has been patched rather than replaced, window sills and casings under failing paint, framing behind a bathroom tiled decades ago, a chimney chase taking water at the flashing, and box gutters on the larger homes. On postwar houses the equivalents are a leaking garage roof edge, a rotted door threshold, and framing behind a shower on an exterior wall.
The evidence that distinguishes them is frass — coarse, sawdust-like shavings mixed with insect fragments, piling up below a small opening. Carpenter ant galleries are clean and smooth inside, almost sanded; termite galleries are packed with soil. Both appear on a WDI report, and if we find carpenter ants we look for the water first, because treating a colony without correcting the moisture simply books a return visit two seasons later.

For odorous house ants it is a matched bait program with follow-up. Bait selection has to match what the colony currently wants, and that shifts through the season — colonies move between carbohydrate and protein preference depending on brood demands, and a sugar bait offered during a protein cycle is simply ignored. That reads to a homeowner as a defective product when it is really a matching failure, and getting it right is most of the craft in this work.
For carpenter ants, treatment targets the nest, which means locating it first — following activity after dark when the ants are genuinely active, checking the moisture sources, and sometimes accepting that a cavity has to be opened to be treated properly. Non-repellent materials matter here, because ants pass through them without detecting them and carry material back, where a repellent product would simply cause the colony to relocate somewhere less convenient.
